Following our meeting in my office, the CnC, using her abilities, flashed out of the office and back to the Andromeda Galaxy Starbase to check on the new Flt Adm, Sammie Young, and to check on the current situation regarding missing starfleet ships.

It was a uneventful night, so I gave the control room crew time off and monitored all systems myself (Atlantis). The crew needed some time to wind down after a hefty work load so it seemed appropriate.

As Dr Zelenka's team reports for duty the following morning with the newly appointed Captain Smeerworld, I descend the staircase from my office and give a casual "good morning everyone" and follow them into the control room.

As Captain Smeerworld sits at his station I ask "So all settled in now captain, ready for your new day" basically askign if he is ok and if it he has gotten used to his new position while letting him know he will do fine and has all the support he may need and a general welcome to the team.

But before he has a chance to answer my AI hologram appears between us as the Atlantis alert sirens sound, my AI reports

"Alert!....Puddle jumpers 1 & 2 detected on approach at half speed, Jumper 1 is fine but jumper 2 has major engine and critical system failures, scans reveal no weapons damage but an energy signature consistent with the EH2 black hole propulsion system, looks like they were caught on the tail end as the black hole collapsed"

I smile at Captain Smeerworld and pat him gently on the shoulder

"Sorry guys looks like its all hands to work, ok Dr Zelenka lets bring them in safely, Captain Smeerworld hail them and see if you can get a report from them, if they need medical attention send them to Dr Beckett, if not have them report to the de-briefing room when they dock, lets get to work folks"

I nod as the final go ahead for the team to get busy.

I leave Atlantis and in a flash I'm back onbaord this regions command Starbase, as I arrive I notice Galactica Actual, & Flt Adm Sammie Young have not yet arrived to take official command.

In the control room I get the attention of one of the senior officers

"Where is Flt Adm Sammie Young, she should be here by now?"

The Captain replies "no sign of her or the Galactica Actual since they left Starbase 157 Alpha in the Milky Way"

I wonder for a moment, hoping her ship hasnt become lost like several of our other ships due to the EH2

"Send out a priority message have her contact us as soon as possible, if no reply I'll take command until she arrives"

The Captain nods and turns to a console to transmit the message to Galactica Actual.

"Ok so whats the latest on our situation?"

The captain hands me data regarding last known positions and missions our missing ships were on.

"Transmit this to Atlantis right away, they will continue the search as soon as they retrieve their away teams"

I also take a look at general scheduled work aboard the starbase and crew rota's.

"Excellent work, I'm impressed, carry on!" I comment to the Captain who has been running non stop trying to keep things on track until Sammie Young Arrives.

“Atlantis to Puddle Jumpers 1 & 2”, I communicate over the comm, “please respond.”

“This is Sheppard in Jumper 1. I'm aboard with Teyla. McKay is flying Jumper 2 and has taken damage. We have managed to extract ourselves from EH2. We lost contact with you when she began the black hole drive, but don't know why it was done so soon after we boarded the ship.”

“EH2 was under attack sir”, I respond, “Not by us, but a rouge Federation freighter on collision course at warp.”

“I told you I hate those bad feelings that I get.”

“We had to destroy the freighter to protect you. That is what triggered EH2 to engage the black hole and leave the area.”

“Well we knew that something pissed her off. We went through five more successive BH drive engagements in rapid succession and things on board gave us the feeling that we were not welcome anymore."

“Can you quit with the update”, McKay cuts in, “and let's figure out how I'm going to bring this Jumper in.”

“How bad of shape is it in?”, I ask.

“Well Lt”, he snaps back, “bad enough for me to be in a near panic. WHAT that means is that I can't fly this thing to hold it together AND attempt to do any repairs at the same time. I am alone here. AND in case you don't know, I'm not real big on piloting skills when I'm flying a working Jumper.”

Since the minute that I met Dr McKay, he annoyed the heck out of me. If it wasn't for the incredible respect that I have for his intellect I would not have the patience to put up with him.

“It is actually Captain Smeerworld now Dr McKay”, I couldn't help to respond.

“Great, I'm gone for two days and the universe gets even crazier than it has become already.”

“Rodney”, Zelenka joins into the comm, “Why don't we focus our energy on getting you home safely. And just so you know, Captain Smeerworld was promoted, because it was his quick actions that saved all of your lives aboard EH2.”

“Great! I'll throw him a party when we get back. IF we all get back that is.”

“Have you considered powering down and abandoning the Jumper?”, I ask.

“Of course”, McKay snaps.

“Actually”, Sheppard returns to the conversation with, “we were just discussing that option when we got into communication range with you.”

“And what has been your assessment of that option?, I ask the team.

“I don't want to abandon the Jumper”, McKay responds.

“But since we are now in communications and in range of the City”, Sheppard continues, “We can do so. I assume that the area is clear?”

“Yes Sir”, I respond,”No other ship in sensor range.”

“Good. Now power down Rodney and prepare to dock with us.”

“Yes”, Rodney responds, switching from running on adrenalin to relieved for it to be over. “I've had enough of trying to hold this ship together.”

“We will send out another Jumper to retrieve the damaged one”, Zelenka informs them.

“Sounds good Atlantis” Sheppard responds. “And congratulations Captain Smeerworld. I can't wait to attend the party that Rodney is going to have for you.”

“Can we get back to docking please”, McKay snaps in frustration. “I'm powered down and holding position.”

“There won't be any reason to rush”, I smile to myself, “First you guys will have to debrief, if there are no injuries, and we should give Dr McKay all the time he needs to prepare the arraignments properly.”

“The only thing I'm thinking about now is a long shower”, McKay interjects, again returning to his calmer, relieved mood.

The rest of my shift went smoothly. Jumper 2 was abandoned and the entire Away team returned safely in Jumper 1. Another Jumper was sent out with a team to bring both vessels back to the City. The last few hours turned real quiet and I left my first full day as Captain with a satisfied feeling that I will be able to handle my new rank.

My holographic AI self appears in Dr Jennifer Keller's quarters.

"Dr Keller Report to sickbay, we have an incomming away team, there are no reports of injury, but no doubt McKay will have something to complain about, but I'd like you to give the full team an examination to be sure. They may feel fine but with the EH2 there could be anything"

As my physical self, I leave my office and head down the stairs toward the control room just as Zelenka and his team are ending their shift, including Captain Smeerworld.

I smile at them as they walk by, and as Captain Smeerworld walks by I wave and ask "Have a good first day...." and laugh slightly ".... sorry I couldnt help overhear your conversation with McKay, good work you handled it rather well, not many can make him quiet or beat him at his own game"

As another team enters the control room to relieve Zelenka's team, a priority message is sent through my systems.

Its from the CnC, saying she is staying at the Starbase until Flt Adm Sammie Young arrives to take her command post, but informs me she could also now be one of the missing starships and to be on the look out for Galactica Actual, along with our other missing starfleet ships.

I relay our information that our away team has reported back to Atlantis and after Dr Keller has examined them we will conduct a debriefing to find out what they learned, if anything.

John, Teyla & Rodney appear in the turbolift, they have just left the jumper room and report that thanx to Zelenka's team especially Captain Smeerworld, both jumpers and all away team members are now back safely.

"Excellent, but to be on the safe side, I'd like you all to report to sickbay, we'll debrief when Dr Keller releases you all, dismissed and welcome back"

Rodney comments "Ahhh Jennifer excellent, now you mention it I do feel a little ah well you know....strange"

John, Teyla and I giggle a little, as well Rodney is definitely a little strange, and we knew he would have some medical issue he always does, but especially when Jennifer is on duty, its like any excuse to be around her he takes.

I began my first night after a full day as captain alone in my room. I'd much rather be drinking beer, but there was only so much that I could take with me as I came through the Gate. I used to drink a lot of whiskey years ago so the taste is far from unfamiliar to me, but I guess being older my stomach isn't inclined to accept it so easily.

It is amazing how many stars you can see in the depths of space. The window does offer one hell of a view. For years, Atlantis spent its time floating in an ocean. I hope there comes a time when this city can again be adrift in one. As much as I enjoy the stars, it would be nice to look out and see a sight that lets me forget what a crazy place I am now living in. I always did love the smell of the salt air.

I hear the door chime and jolt back from my day dreaming. Shit, though there is nothing wrong with having a drink after work, I would still rather not have anyone see that I'm alone in my room slamming down a bottle of hard liquor. I put my glass down and step back as I open the door. It is Ronon standing outside. Thankfully he is alone.

“Come at a bad time?”, he asks me.

“No of course not”, I respond. I step back farther into the room and he steps inside. The door closes behind him after a few moments. I didn't notice at first, but now see that he has a bunch of arrows gripped in one hand held down by his side. He smiles and raises them up to me.

“It took a little effort”, he tells me, “but I managed to get your arrows retrieved from outside. The atmospheric shield kept them from floating out into space, still I had to get a city maintenance tech hunt them down while he was out working on something near the base of the tower.”

“I hope that the kitchen staff didn't see you walk past with them. They might lock up the dishes and fruit from us.” We both laugh over that thought. “This is great. I was worried that it would take a long time to get new ones sent to me from Earth.” I take the arrows from him and put them down on top of my dresser near where my bow is hanging on the wall. “Have you had a chance to check in on the Away team?”

“Yeah, they seem OK from their time away from the City. Rodney seems a little exhausted and stressed out, but I'm sure that Dr Keller will be able to get him back to normal.”

“Whatever normal is for him.”

“I've known Rodney a long time now. Yeah he can be hard on people, but he is a good man.”

“I know. It is just going to take me a while to accept him as he is.”

“He is going to have that party for you. You'll never hear it from him, but he does like you.”

“I guess I should feel honored.”

“I think he sees in you what I also see. It was your sporting bow that first caught my eye, but after that night out on the balcony and our target practice I saw that you are someone special.”

“I wish that I could see what all of you others see in me. All I see is a college professor that got sidestepped into a military career to see all of my physics theory realized at a posting on an ancient alien city traveling in a galaxy 2.2 million light years from home.”

“You have no idea how well you are fitting into the position you are now in. You were born to be where you are right now and taking on the responsibility you have been given.”

I am sick of being reassured that I belong here. Are people going out of their way to point this out to me, because of my medical report?

“I heard that you were not the most social person that you are now”, I say trying to turn the focus away from me. “What happened?”

“My world was destroyed by the Wraith. It took me a long time to embrace feeling a part of your world. What changed me the most, was the time I spent on Earth once Atlantis landed there. Your planet is a wonderful place. Both Teyla and me were so easily accepted to become a part of it. Yeah I felt that way when I was only with Atlantis, but that was only a part of your society. Living on Earth made me understand your civilization to a whole new level. I feel like it is home for me now.”

“Not knowing anything beyond Earth till recently, I never really knew how special our planet is. Still, I'm sure that you only were mostly exposed to what is good about it. Trust me, there are plenty of things about it that are not so wonderful.”

Ronon seemed to spend a little time wrestling some thoughts and studying me before speaking again.

“That is part of what I see in you that makes you stand out. I don't know your full history, but you have seen some of the real ugly that you hint at when you describe Earth. Most people I've met from your planet and became part of the Atlantis team, have not been touched by that part of your world. You don't fit the profile of what is a normal team member here. It is this other part, the part that makes you different from the others, you don't see it as an asset, but it is.”

I can't help but laugh over that comment. He is sure right about that. I don't know what to say. How could he even have a clue about my life before I finally got set on the road that led me back to education and my science career. The SGC learned about most of it when they vetted me, still they accepted me into their ranks.

This is the main reason for my anxiety here. I am not worthy to be among all of these good people. I know that my past has scarred and corrupted me too much to ever fit in. It will just be a matter of time till every one sees it. What I have been through in my early life, what I did – I can't see it as an asset.

It is a curse.

Following the away team meeting, I sent a report to CnC Janeway, currently standing in command at this galaxy's starbase awaiting Flt Adm Sammie Young to arrive.

A message came back with acknowledgement, and orders to postpone the search for the EH2 as our missing starfleet ships and to investigate why we havent had contact from them and certain colonies also.

She informs me that she is taking all information regarding EH2 into consideration and formulating a new plan and ideas and is also going to speak to Hash about it.

Its late here on Atlantis, and most of the crew are off duty now, the command center is on grey mode and operating soley by me.

I activate citywide comms and relay our new orders and tell the crew that we will start by going to a near by planet colony, not only to investigate but to restock the city and allow the crew a little r 'n' r before getting fully underway with our mission. I note that I have managed to obtain communication with this colony and so far all appears normal, but its the closest to us so we should stop there first.

What the crew arent aware of is that we wont be maintaining an orbit of the planet, but that I will actually be landing the city on the ocean of the planet close by one of the stations.

I engage the ships engines and set off toward the planet, slow and gentle as there is no immediate rush, and plan on being ocean side by morning.

I try to hide the frustration from my face after being told by Ronon that the dark parts of my past should be considered an asset and not a hindrance. We are still together in my room. He came to visit me after checking in on the just returned Away team. As well as I try to look comfortable with myself, I know that he can tell that I am somewhat upset.

“Do you mind if I help myself to the replicator?”, he asks.

“No of course, make yourself at home.”

Ronon moves over to the replicator and orders himself a Budweiser. I ask him why the machine is not giving him synthehol and he explains that once the computer recognizes the operator's voice, it can determine if the person is off-duty, or not. Again I find myself frustrated by my lack of understanding behind all that this grand new reality I'm living in has to offer. I guess that I should not beat myself up over it, because the shear amount of it would be overwhelming to anybody.

Since I have already had a good start with my whiskey, I move over to my bottle of it and refill my glass to drink along with him.

“To the safe return of our team”, I say as a toast. We both take big sips of our drinks.

“You know”, Ronon begins, “Now that we have your arrows back, we can go to one of the industrial replicators and have one of them scanned. With it put on file, we won't have to worry about loosing them anymore. We'll be able to make as many as we need then.”

“Sounds like a good idea. We can also scan the bow so you can have your own.”

“I can have one of the techs show me how to modify it also. I have a bigger reach than you, so I can set it up to have a longer pull range.”

“Modify it all you want buddy. I still will have better aim with it than you.”

“Give me a few days. Once I'm comfortable with it, there is no weapon that I can't kick ass with.”

We both laugh over that. Over the citywide comm, we hear Dr Weir announcing our new orders and that we will be visiting a near-by colony world to do some investigating, restocking, and enjoy some r'n'r time. We both have an unspoken toast to that and finish off our drinks.

It may not be the Sun that I grew up with, but as I close my eyes and let its rays warm my face - I can imagine myself being back at the Jersey shore. I spend some time trying to forget that I'm on an Ancient city, on some alien ocean, on an alien planet, in a distant galaxy millions of light-years away from New Jersey.

This is my first time being outside, since Atlantis has only been traveling through space during my time here. I'm sitting on one of the 'piers' near the edge of the city, with my legs dangling off. Dark ocean water is churning 20 meters below. I am blown away by how large this place is – huge. Although it is not as large, it still seems like NYC is behind me - skyscrapers and all.

It's hard to believe that I have actually been flying this thing! I wasn't the one to land Atlantis here, but I've been given the Ancient gene therapy, so I will be able to use the Chair if the need arises.

There are groups of people clustered around in different areas enjoying our 'ocean visit', but I found a spot where I can be alone. I can imagine Dr Weir, or my counselor looking at me from some distant window high above. Still being haunted by my medical assessment, I can imagine them all worried that my 'anxiety' is kicking in. What is so bad with some alone time?

I laugh at this. Maybe I am a little paranoid? They're right – I'm nuts!

This morning I ran into Ronon. Although it isn't 'official', Dr McKay supposedly is actually planning a Captain Smeerworld party for me in some outlying station near the coast of the continent nearest to us. McKay hasn't said anything about it to me, even though I've spoken to him a few times since he returned from his Away mission. I'm not holding my breath over it, but my opinion of McKay will be more favorable if he is really doing it by his own initiative. I really don't want all of the fanfare, but in this case I'll take it if it comes.

What I'm looking forward to most over the next few days are getting a chance to do some investigating for the mission (trying to see if anyone here has news if and why some colonies are not communicating back) and the camping/hunting trip that Ronon and I are planning.

A noise builds and I shield my eyes to catch two Puddle Jumper rising from the city and heading off towards the colony. The away teams are starting to head out. I check the time and see that my duty-shift starts in 90 minutes. Time to head back and get ready for work.

In the control room, Dr Keller is showing me the latest medical report of Captain Smeerworld. Everything checks out ok, and the levels of anxiety are extremely low, considering everything we've recently been through. She tells me he's showing remarkable recovery abilities and dealing with things quite well. But she will continue to monitor him for now and will check in with the councillor also.

I look out the tower window and see in the distance Captain Smeerworld sat on the edge of one of the piers. I'm not worried about him, but to be on the safe side, as is protocol anyway during a water landing, not just for his benefit, the city shields just below the waterline are active. A command authorisation would be needed to lower it. Since the time we had the accident involving Lt Ford this has been standard protocol.

I watch as he stands up and heads for one of the turbo lifts, his team are due anytime to be on duty so he is perhaps going to his quarters to get ready.

I then remember that Rodney, Zelenka and a few others, talking to me about a party for Captain Smeerworld, it was Rodney's idea, to congratulate him on his promotion, and also I quote "for saving his ass".

But the party is also a hair down informal and more family way of welcoming him to Atlantis.

We will be here on this planet for a while, several teams have already left Atlantis in jumpers and headed in various directions for supply runs and intel for our impending mission, but they are also starting preparations for the party too. Rodney has gone with Sheppard to arrange the perfect location.

A little time has passed and its almost time for Zelenka, Smeerworld and the rest of the team to report for duty. I've been on duty all day, I chuckle to me self that Im always on duty everywhere, but I exit my office and head for the holodeck, I wanted to try out a game High Admiral Janeway told me about, Velocity, we were both supposed to play but as she isnt here I'll have to make do with a holo opponent, I smirk again as basically it will be me vs me, afterall I also control the holodecks.

Just as I'm about to enter one of the turbo lifts, Dr Zelenka exits the same one.

"Ah Radek, Im heading for the holodeck, you're in command until I get back, let me know if you need me, though I see no cause for concern while were here, you should hopefully have a peacful shift"

Zelenka replies "good I could use the time to catch up on my chess skills, Im playing Rodney later tonight, the looser pulls a double shift......"

He shakes his head a little and laughs and adds ".... though it may be easier to let him win, you know what a sore looser he can be"

We smile at each other and then head off our opposite ways.

As the turbo lift door closes and Im transported to the holodeck, Im thinking about Rodney, and how he can often come across as uncaring, and even comment that he couldnt care less, but nothing could be further from the truth, he's a man of deepest caring and love for his fellow Atlantians and others, and more so those he sees himself in, shy, anxious, uneasy in crowded situations, not always knowing what and when to comment or how best to fit in. I laugh as I think Rodney covers all that by being a "know it all" and showing it, but its his go to defence mostly, clever though he is.

He told me that he has a big appreciation for Captain Smeerworld, not only for saving him and the away team, but because of the similarities, he commented that he could see the two of them becoming the best of friends, like he is with Zelenka.
Sure they butt heads alot and it would appear they hate each other, but its their way. The truth is all the head butting actually helps their creativity and has often gotten us out of really tough spots.

I am both impressed and disappointed by the Federation colony on AG-1067.

I remember when the universe first opened up to me upon being introduced to the Stargates, the Federation, and everything else most Earthlings live their lives not fully knowing about.

So much of it is still overwhelming.

So many planets to visit, not just in the Milky Way galaxy, but in galaxies beyond. So many planets that there are not even enough names available to give them all their own unique one. AG-1067 is such a sad designation to give this wonderful world.

I kinda like Planet Smeerworld myself, but I'm sure that the idea is more than half inspired by the Romulan ale that I'm drinking.

I've heard so much about the places the SG teams visited in our home galaxy and the Pegasus galaxy, when Atlantis spent it's first 5 years after being occupied by us. So many of them were like trips back in time – either to Egyptian, or Medieval ways of life. With the shake-up of the universe into a collage of alternate time-lines, the Federation has seemingly absorbed much of it. Its footprint covering almost everywhere humans reside. Transporters, warp drive, slipstream drive, holodecks, and all kinds of amazing technology can be found all over. And, if it is not there yet, it's coming.

As diverse as different planets are, things are really much more the same then I would have preferred. The hall where this party is being held, seems like I'm sure almost any Federation banquet hall would be on a thousand worlds.

I try not to linger on the disappointing aspect in already feeling smothered by this new familiar. The dark moment quickly subsides.

Of course there are many truly 'alien' places to visit out here. When scientists tried to guess at the uniqueness of Earth, before exo-solar-systems were discovered, I don't think that its small size was the first thing that came to mind. Super-Earths account for more than half of the life-bearing worlds discovered. The average planet size harboring life is three times Earth's mass, with atmospheres much thicker and oxygen-rich. I'd have to wear an environmental suit, with anti-gravs to lessen my weight to visit them, but I'd love to when the chance arises. The scientist in me seeks diversity and the unexpected, not commonality and the predictable.

Thinking about the unexpected, this party has given that to me. Not by the event itself, but my own reaction to it. I really am enjoying myself and, the enjoyment is not because of the buzz in my head, but the companionship I feel with my fellow Atlantis crew mates. Even Rodney is not getting on my nerves. He has really come through by setting up this party for me. I'm sure when he brought up the idea of a party for me over the comm, it was just the sarcastic comment it sounded like at the time, but has truly turned into an event planned for me by a new friend.

I hear that a near-death event, that occurred to him a few years back, changed him at a fundamental level when it comes to family and friends. I guess that the brain-parasite that nearly killed him, did him a big favor in the end.

I was about to finish off my drink when Ronon finds some excuse to slap me on the back, causing me to spill what's left all over my lap. My mind slips out of the fog it was in and I try to think back to the joke my ears just heard, but my mind didn't. I know it was something Sheppard said, but I don't have a clue beyond that. I spend a moment trying to return to the present and the company I'm with.

As I reset my focus, I notice that Dr Weir has finally arrived to the party. With Atlantis peacefully adrift off the coast, I guess she finally left her AI avatar overseeing the skeleton crew manning the city so she could be here in person. I see that Dr Keller is with her along with a few others. I know that I'm certainly off-duty and it is my party, still I hope that she won't be able to tell how horrendously shit-face I actually am.

As most of the crew are now ashore attending Captain Smeerworld's party, I leave my ship self and holographic personailty so I too can attend the party.

I've just been speaking with Dr Keller about the Captain, she feels that this party is just what he needs to relax and wind down and not feel so overwhelmed, and it will assist into making him feel part of the family.

What she hasnt told me is the results of a recent scan she performed, that shows deep scars on the Captain. But being Atlantis I already have full knowledge of this, and that the Captain wishes not to speak of it.

Its my responsibility as leader of this community, as with all in command, to be aware of any and all conditions of my crew, and by default, being linked with my ship self, it happens anyway automatically, but the report states it isnt a worry for the moment, and unless the Captain personally comes to me or Dr Keller for assistance, it will remain unspoken of to respect his rights.

The only time I would go againts the wishes of medical privacy would be in the event it would place them selves or other crew members at risk.
I mean privacy is one thing, but I wouldnt let a crewman hold a phazer to his own head, or do something to effect the city and its people, but those are the extreme circumstances where I would over-ride privacy and be activaly involved, until then its the individuals right to privacy, plus Im sure the Captain knows we all care for him as part of our family and all he need do is ask, my office is always open.

Dr Keller and I join the party together, seems I've just missed out on one of Sheppards jokes.

I see Captain Smeerworld and Ronan, I head over and comment "I hope Im not too late, I wouldnt want to miss all the fun......" and also comment ".... its nice to see you relaxed and enjoying your self Captain"

Then, slightly more drunk than he wants us to believe, Rodney comes over and says "That's my pal right there, he saved me you know, yeah, stopped a ship from plowing right into me, thats right, he's my buddy"

Rodney gently nudges Captain Smeerworld's shoulder with a fist, and then ruffles his hair and says "welcome to the family buddy, if you ever need anything, you only need to ask"

Rodney then wobbles on his feet and claims he feels dizzy and had better sit down, being someone who likes to panick he waves over Dr Keller who merely laughs, then Rodney waves her away again and comments "so where was I..Oh yeah, Captain buddy boy.....*hic*"

I intervene "Rodney dont monopolize the Captains free time, Im sure there's plenty to go around"

I laugh and look at Captain Smeerworld and roll my eyes and shake my head.

Ronan hands me a drink and asks if the city is safe, I tell him of course I am, I'm always safe. Ronan laughs, even Ronan still can't quite grasp that I'm actually Atlantis her self, it wasn't too long ago that it was revealed.

It is funny seeing Dr McKay so drunk. It is amazing how, even with all of the alcohol, he still has a hard time being able to 'fit in' in a natural easy going way. He is so socially awkward, no matter how hard he tries not to be. Since he is in such a great mood and gave me the opening, I figure that I'll bring up something that has been bothering me.

"Dr McKay", I ask him, "since you've asked, have you given any more thought to my request for the equipment and energy allocations that I've been asking for? My lab experiments are of great interest to me and I really don't have what I need to do my work"

"What for your Higgs Field dynamic experiments?" Rodney quickly turns back into his annoying mode that I normally have to deal with when he is sober. His tone of voice takes everyone away from the light, happy mood that the group has been enjoying. I see most eyes turn towards me, after giving Rodney a look of disappointment. I'm amazed how quickly I feel my heart pounding. His surprising change in demeanor towards me was like a slap in the face. I did want to take advantage of the light moment to get a concession from him, but figured that the worst case outcome would have been a polite brush off. Now I'm pissed, real pissed.

“Yes for my Higgs experiments”, I reply in what I hope is a calm even voice.

“But why even bother”, he responds and goes into a real annoying 'know it all' laugh. “Have you even read all of the data that we have from the Ancient database? Their science is a thousand years ahead of ours. Whatever you want to know is all there. You'll even find all the answers in the Federation database. Why waste your time?”

“Come on Rodney”, Ronon speaks up, “You just asked him if he needs anything to just ask.”

“Yeah, but not to ask for things that are a waste of time!”, Rodney snaps back.

I can tell that almost everyone at the table is getting ready to shut Rodney down, but I will not be denied doing this myself. Despite all the alcohol in me, a whole bunch of thoughts begin to race through my mind. Amazingly, I am experiencing a tremendous moment of clarity. A hidden fact that has been frustrating me ever since I arrived here has jumped out into the forefront of my mind. It is a fact that is far more pervasive than just Dr McKay being annoying.

“I have to thank you Dr McKay”, I begin, “You've just made me realize something very important.” Worry begins to register on the faces around me, everyone except McKay. The great doctor is too self-absorbed right now to be aware of anything but himself.

“Perhaps we can put this off till another time”, Sheppard calmly advises Dr McKay and I. I will have no part of it. I see both Dr Weir and Keller move in closer to us.

“No”, I say in a voice louder than I should have allowed it to be, “I've just realized something that has been frustrating me for a while now and I can't think of a better time to speak of it to you all. And no Dr McKay, believe it or not, this isn't even about how annoying you can be.”

“Perhaps you should spend some time to sober up and reflect on this for a while Captain”, Dr Keller interjects, trying to diffuse the moment also.

“I can assure you all that this is not some drunk-speak rambling I'm getting ready to throw at you. This is important.” I'm happy that Dr Weir has chosen to not step in and shut this whole situation down. I think that she can see in my face that this truly is important for me to get out. My respect for her has gone up another few notches.

“You've all been here for a while. All of this Ancient and Federation knowledge, all of this technology, it has become the new standard for you. The human race has been pushed centuries into the future and it is all just water under the bridge.” Dr McKay is watching me attentively now on his swaying feet. “Well 18 months ago, when you were battling the Wraith and jumping between galaxies, transporting around, flying through hyperspace, what was I doing? I was on Earth, living in the early 21st century. I was teaching at Princeton and going on to my eighth year exciting new discoveries in Higgs Field dynamic experiments. Using my feeble 21st century knowledge, I had the next decade set up to produce all new physics discoveries.”

I pause for a second, overcome by the passion that has surged through me by sharing these thoughts and feelings. I notice that I captured the attention of everyone within earshot.

“Look at where I am now”, I continue, “I'm in the future. Everything that I was striving toward, shit everything that everyone back in the 21st century was striving for has been flushed down the fuck'n toilet! Well Dr McKay, have you maybe given a thought that perhaps I don't want to just read in some alien database all of the discoveries that I would have been able to find on my own? Making these discoveries using the potential I had at my disposal from all of human history up to that point? Maybe I want to continue my experiments because I have faith in the humanity that I left. All of this knowledge and technology that we are all surrounded with here, maybe I would feel more accepting of it if I could let myself find my own path to it without just 'catching up' by jumping ahead a millennium overnight.”

It felt so good to let this out. It also felt good to see some understanding from the look that many were giving me. It felt good until Dr Mckay opened his mouth again -

“But it is such a waste of time”, McKay responds with a tone that sounds like he thinks I'm an idiot.

I stood back and watched as Captain Smeerworld & Dr McKay had their disagreement.

Just as I thought it had ended, Rodney, of course, must have the last word by still claiming that the idea was a waste of time.
Although many officers have been drinking, theres harmless quips and then theres going a step too far.

"Rodney thats enough, one more word out of you and I'm sending you back to Atlantis, regardless if you organised this party or not....." I yell and look at Sheppard who is standing by just incase Rodney needs escorting back to his quarters.

As people are still gawping in amazement I continue "... Remember when we first came to Atlantis and the Stargate programme, before we were flung into this mixed up timeline, although smart even you wanted to continue certain experiments, not only that but you truely believed and sometimes accomplished, re-hashing some ancient ideas and half finished plans and designs...... and..." I say glaring at him "... what happened when you tried to question Andromeda, High Admiral Janeway and the fact that after so long didnt even know I was actually Atlantis in person, though pretending you did know"

As Rodney kind of shuffles his head downward and mumbles to him self "yeah I suppose so" he briefly lifts his head and holds out his hand as if to shake Captain Smeerworld's hand and quietly mumbles "Im sorry"

"Ok folks lets get back to the party it isnt over yet... nothing wrong with airing our views out in public, thats how progress, scientific, personal and otherwise, is made .... Captain..." I say as I look toward him and smile "... You have my permission to use any resources you require for your experiments and if you need a hand Im sure other crew members wouldnt mind getting involved"

I say that just as Zelenka looks up with a "huh" expression and then he smiles at Smeerworld and says "tell me more about them Im intregued"

Zelenka then goes on to tell Smeerworld all the different science experiments he was involved with before Atlantis, and to ignore Rodney, chances are, now he has the go ahead, Rodney will no doubt add his opinions and try to be involved, just take him with a pinch of salt, I always do.

Just then theres a flash behind me, my personal sensors already know who it is, and sure enough as I turn around, there is our CnC Kathryn Janeway.

"I hope I havent missed anything, seems quite the party..." she leans beside me and looks at Captain Smeerworld who is now talking with Zelenka and calls out with a smile "excellent party, welcome to the family, I wouldnt have missed this for all the tea in china"

I tell her about the slight disturbance that just went on, but of course she was already aware. She tells me some good news, that Flt Admiral Sammie Young has finally arrived at the starbase in her ship Galactica Actual, and has now taken command.

"Oh excellent I was beginning to get worried, and as you can see this colony is fine, we just decided to take advantage of a little rest and restock before continuing onward.... will you be joining us, and is there any more news on the situation"

She tells me, no further news just yet, and that she would join us for a while, but soon must go back and check in with Kat and the fleet. She knows about the strange Netchien pride markings on the shuttle that was with the Hirogen and wants to check it out.

I hand her a drink "ahh of course, well give my best to the girls, Rommy, Kat & V, and your counter part on Voyager 2, and indeed all crews.

Janeway nods takes her drink and we walk around mingling.

What a great evening I have been having. The party wound up lasting all through the night – at least for the true 'die hards' who can handle drinking and carrying on for so long. Unfortunately a good part of the events have already become a memory blur to me. I do know that after Dr McKay's annoying episode, everyone was able to return to the light, happy mood that was almost destroyed. The fact that McKay found a way to virtually disappear for the rest of the party helped. I believe that I might have to thank Dr Keller for that. I thought I caught glimpses of her comforting and babysitting him off in a corner somewhere.

Although I feel somewhat bad about the McKay incident, arriving at the realization behind my frustrations and anxieties, that I have been experiencing at Atlantis, has lifted my spirits greatly. Discovering that so many others could also relate to these feelings that I have been going through is also a tremendous help.

The sky has begun to brighten with the coming dawn. Just the brightest stars withing the alien constellations overhead remain. Ronon, Sheppard, and I have been walking around the outskirts of the colony for about the last hour. I think we all hoped that the fresh air would have sobered us up a little, but I think I will still have the bed-spins to look forward to when I finally do lay down.

“So do you think that you guys are going to be ready to head off on your hunting trip later today”, Sheppard asks us.

I give Ronon a quick glance and see the same look on his face that I'm probably showing – a mix of exhaustion, but excitement.

“It would be nice to have an extra day to get ready”, I reply, “but we are lucky that Dr Weir has been able to give us the three days of vacation time that she has.”

“Come on Capitan”, John confronts me, “You don't need time to get ready. You an Ronon have had your gear packed and the hunting grounds mapped out almost since the moment that Atlantis set down. You need time to recover from your party.”

“Jennifer approached me before she left the party”, Ronon says,” She told us to go see her before we leave to pickup some hangover meds that are some of the Federation's finest achievements.”

“That's one gift from the future that I will have no resentment accepting”, I joke. We all laugh over that.

“Are you sure that you can't find a way to join us John”, Ronon asks him.

“While you two go off and have fun shooting your arrows in the forest, I'm going to be running a few more away missions to try find some information on the silent colonies. Besides, I hear that you guys are going to really ruff it out there. I'd rather stay at home with all of its luxuries.”

“I've read many of you old mission reports when I was learning about Gate Mission procedures. You have amazing survivor skills”

“And the most important survivor skill that I have learned over the years is to avoid getting into harsh situations where I will need to use the rest of them. You guys are going to head out with the bare minimum and hunting for food with bows and arrows. That is not fun for me.”

I'm disappointed that he won't be joining us. This night has been the first time that I have spent any length of time with Sheppard off-duty. He is a great guy and fits into the friendship that I have developed with Ronon perfectly. Thinking about the hunting trip before us, I guess it is time to try to catch some sleep before we leave.

“I don't know about you guys”, I say as I stop walking, “but speaking of luxuries has put me in the mood to stop this walking and head back to the Jumper. I assume that you are awake and sober enough to fly the thing?"

“That won't be a problem for us. Elizabeth is real good at anticipating the needs of those under her command. She has a pilot posted at the Jumper waiting to fly us back.”

When we arrive at the landing field, the Jumper and pilot are there as expected. What did surprise us was the second ship waiting - a Starfleet Class:One Shuttle. Although Atlantis is fully stocked with a fleet of Jumpers, being part of Universal Starfleet has also put a few Federation Shuttles at our disposal.

What is the Shuttle doing here?

As we say hello to our 'designated driver', at the hatch to the Jumper, he informs us that I will not be riding back with them, but will be riding in the Shuttle. Hearing this, I see Ronon and Sheppard exchange knowing looks. They both seem to have figured out what's probably going on. I run the possibilities through my own head, but can't fix on any obvious conclusion.

A smell caught my nose that was alluring at this early time of morning – strong coffee. Walking around from the far side of the Shuttle is CnC Kathryn Janeway! This takes me by complete surprise, but apparently no one else is. I am amazed that she would be here this early in the morning and apparently is the Shuttle pilot for my trip.

“Good morning gentlemen” she says with a cheerful look on her face as she walks up to us.

It has been a real long night. My exhaustion has been trying to get the better of me for a while now. The fact that I was planning to nap on the Jumper, during the short trip back to the city, and that my own bed is waiting for me has been the only thing keeping me together. I believe that behind the Admiral's smile is the same awareness of how I'm feeling right now.

Despite not yet able to grasp the reason for her giving me this first-class shuttle ride back to Atlantis, I do not sense any bad vibes radiating off of her. If anything, she seems like a women who is simply full of peace and contentment while enjoying her coffee this early morning.

It is my own behavior over the last 12 hours that is making me feel uncomfortable. In my mind, I can remember this same feeling way back when I was a teenager, being caught sneaking back into my house by my parents after a night of underage drinking.

Janeway stands before us and takes another sip from her coffee container as she waits for us to respond. All three of us hesitate, not sure who should speak first.

“It's nice to see you again Admiral”, Sheppard decides to begin for us, “At the party there was so much going on, that we had little time to talk. It is a little surprising though to see you here so early in the morning.”

“With good coffee to wake up to”, the Admiral responds, “I could not think of a better way to start the morning. This is a lovely planet and I don't get much of a chance to take a Shuttle out that often anymore - outside of a crisis. Flying over the pre-dawn ocean was very relaxing” The Admiral turns to focus directly on me. “Besides I now how a little time to get to know our newest Captain in the fleet. With the Federation spread across a few galaxies now, I've found it best to take advantage of whatever opportunities arise wherever I happen to be. You never know when moments like this will come again.” She speaks in such a pleasant manner, that I find myself hypnotized by her.

“I'm honored that you have found the time to fly out here to talk with me. I'm such a small fish in the scheme of things”, I finally get the courage to say.

“Don't sell yourself short Captain. You have been promoted to a very important position and Atlantis is a very important posting. We are at the beginning of what I fear will be many trying times ahead. I believe that Atlantis, Dr Weir, and all of you under her command will be tasked with playing a large role in resolving these troubles.”

“We are prepared to step up to whatever is asked of us Admiral”, Ronon says.

“I have no doubt of that Ronon”, she replies giving him a respectful look. She looks up to the brightening sky. “I'm sure that the day ahead is going to be as busy for me as it will be for you. I suggest that we man our ships and head back to the City.” She again looks to me and outstretches her arm toward the Shuttle. “Captain, your ride awaits you.”

“Thank you Admiral” I give the others a goodbye nod and take the lead towards the shuttle's hatch. As I enter the ship, I hear Janeway say a brief goodbye to the others and then follow behind me. With a brief moment to myself, I feel my body trembling slightly. Yeah I'm a physical wreck right now, but mostly I'm real nervous about the time we will be spending alone on the ride back.
